Arkansas River Lock & Dam Town

Apartments in Webbers Falls, OK

Welcome to Webbers Falls, a small Muskogee County river town on the Arkansas River, home to Webbers Falls Lake and a Cherokee trading-post heritage.

Webbers Falls is a small incorporated town in the southeastern corner of Muskogee County, Oklahoma, set on the Arkansas River where the waterway widens behind the Webbers Falls Lock and Dam. With a population of 338 at the 2020 census, it is among the smaller municipalities in the county, and its identity is tied closely to the river that both names it and shapes its economy and recreation. The town's name comes from a seven-foot waterfall in the Arkansas River, named in honor of Walter Webber, a chief of the Western Cherokee who established a trading post at the site in 1828 and brought goods upriver in keelboats. Early French explorers had called the falls La Cascade. This Cherokee heritage runs through the town's early history: Webbers Falls organized its public school after 1907 statehood, and residents founded the First Baptist Church in 1882, reported as the second-oldest Baptist church in Indian Territory. The defining modern feature of the landscape is the Webbers Falls Lock and Dam, part of the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, which impounds Webbers Falls Lake, a roughly 17-square-mile pool popular for fishing, boating, camping, and watersports. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages recreation areas along the lake, and a scenic overlook above the powerhouse looks out over the lock, dam, and water. Residents are served by Webbers Falls Public Schools, a small pre-kindergarten-through-twelfth-grade district. Interstate 40 crosses the Arkansas River just southeast of town, connecting Webbers Falls to Muskogee to the northwest and the Arkansas state line to the east, while U.S. Route 64 runs through the community. The surrounding countryside mixes river bottomland with wooded hills, and the town remains a compact, close-knit community whose public life centers on the school, churches, and the lake.
