Adair County Town Near the Arkansas Line

Apartments in Watts, OK

Welcome to Watts, a small Adair County town near the Arkansas line, set in the hills of northeastern Oklahoma.

Watts is a small town in northern Adair County, Oklahoma, in the hilly northeastern corner of the state near the Arkansas border. It lies about six miles south of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and is part of the historic Cherokee Nation, a region with deep roots in the Cherokee people's history in Oklahoma. The town is named for John Watts, also known as Young Tassel, a Chickamauga Cherokee chief who lived in the late 18th century. The name reflects the Cherokee heritage of the area, where many place names and communities trace their origins to the Cherokee Nation and the era of Indian Territory. Watts has remained a small, agricultural community through its history. With a population of 227 at the 2020 census, it is among the smallest incorporated towns in Adair County. The local economy has long been tied to farming and livestock, and the town has been home to feed mills that served the surrounding countryside. A Works Progress Administration-built park from the 1930s remains part of the community's civic landscape. The town's location gives it a quiet, rural character while keeping it connected to nearby employment centers. Many residents commute to Siloam Springs, just six miles north, or to larger towns in the region such as Westville and Stilwell. Watts has its own public school district, which anchors community life and serves local families. For those drawn to the hills, creeks, and small towns of northeastern Oklahoma and the Ozark foothills, Watts offers a low-density, close-knit way of life in the heart of Cherokee country.
