Green Country College Town

Apartments in Warner, OK

Welcome to Warner, a Muskogee County college town where Connors State College anchors a small community set among the lakes and farm country of eastern Oklahoma.

Warner is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, in the eastern part of the state known as Green Country, about twenty miles south of Muskogee. Its development followed the arrival of the railroad in the early 1900s, when the Muskogee Southern Railroad built through the area and the town became a shipping point for the surrounding farm country. The town briefly became a connection point in 1911, when a second rail line reached nearby Webbers Falls. Early commercial agriculture centered on corn, garden produce, livestock, and dairy goods, and the town grew steadily through the twentieth century. Warner is best known today as the home of Connors State College, a public two-year college established in the early twentieth century. Warner residents donated 160 acres of land to secure the school's location, and the institution, named for John P. Connors, became a state-accredited college in 1927. The college remains a defining presence, one of the town's largest employers and the source of much of its activity, from academic programs to athletics. A reservoir built to supply the college with water, Warner Lake, sits on the campus and is part of local life. The town has a small, walkable core near the campus and its highway corridor, with homes, churches, and the public schools clustered nearby. Warner Public Schools serves students from elementary through high school, and the community's designation as a Purple Heart City reflects its veterans and civic pride. The surrounding countryside is a mix of farm and ranch land, with the Arkansas River valley, Fort Gibson Lake, and Sequoyah State Park within a short drive. For residents, Warner offers a quiet, community-centered way of life with the energy of a college campus and convenient access to Muskogee and Interstate 40.
