Tishomingo is the largest city and the county seat of Johnston County, set in the rolling hills of south-central Oklahoma about thirty-one miles east of Ardmore and roughly 115 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. It takes its name from Tishomingo, a noted Chickasaw chief who died on the Trail of Tears in 1838, and the community has carried that heritage forward for more than a century and a half. From 1856 until Oklahoma achieved statehood in 1907, Tishomingo served as the first capital of the Chickasaw Nation, and its historic Chickasaw National Capitol building, sold to Johnston County in 1910, long served as the county courthouse and remains central to the town's identity. Murray State College, established in 1908 as the Murray State School of Agriculture and named for William H. Tishomingo is also home to Tishomingo Public Schools, a K-12 district of roughly 900 students. The surrounding landscape shapes daily life. Pennington Creek runs through the city and its namesake park, while the Blue River, a spring-fed stream prized for its trout and smallmouth bass fishing, flows nearby. The Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge, a large tract of wetlands and upland habitat, draws birders and hunters and underscores the area's outdoor orientation, and Lake Texoma lies within easy reach to the south.
