The community was founded in the late 1890s, when citizens petitioned to incorporate under the laws then governing Indian Territory, and it originally lay within Pickens County of the Chickasaw Nation. For most of its history, Thackerville was a quiet agricultural town, with farmers and ranchers forming the backbone of the local economy. The town's fortunes changed with the arrival of large-scale casino gaming. WinStar World Casino and Resort, developed by the Chickasaw Nation just off Interstate 35, grew into one of the largest casino resorts in the world and transformed Thackerville into a regional entertainment destination. The resort anchors the local economy, drawing visitors from Dallas–Fort Worth, Oklahoma City, and across the region, and supporting jobs throughout the surrounding area. Despite that prominence, Thackerville itself remains a small place, with a population of roughly 400. The town offers the WinStar Golf Academy for golfers and the Border Casino near the interstate, but everyday life retains a rural, small-town rhythm.
