Cherokee-Rail Town in Rogers County

Apartments in Talala, OK

Welcome to Talala, a small Rogers County town along U.S. Highway 169, named for a prominent Cherokee leader.

Talala is a small incorporated town in Rogers County, Oklahoma, in the rolling ranchland of the state's northeast, about nineteen miles northwest of Claremore along U.S. Highway 169. Its history is tied to both the Cherokee Nation and the railroad. The Talala Post Office was established in 1890, and the town takes its name from Captain John Talala, a prominent Cherokee who served in the 3rd Regiment of the Indian Home Guard. The community itself dates to 1889, when the Kansas and Arkansas Valley Railway was completed through the area. Talala grew as a railroad stop serving the farms and ranches of the surrounding countryside, and its early boom was brief. The population reached a high of about 340 in 1910, then declined to under 200 by 1930 as the town's businesses contracted and its brick buildings were dismantled. It has remained a small, stable community since, with a population of roughly 260 today. The town's identity now rests on its rural setting and its place in the Will Rogers country of Rogers County. Talala is part of the Oologah-Talala Public Schools district, pairing it with the nearby community of Oologah, the birthplace of the famed Oklahoma humorist, and the shared school district keeps the two towns closely connected in civic life. U.S. Highway 169 keeps Talala tied to Claremore and Tulsa to the south, while the surrounding ranchland, Oologah Lake, and the Verdigris River country define its quiet, northeastern Oklahoma character. The area's Cherokee heritage and rail-era origins remain part of the local sense of place. For those seeking a small, history-rooted town with convenient highway access, Talala offers a low-density, unhurried setting.
