Latimer County Town

Apartments in Red Oak, OK

Welcome to Red Oak, a small Latimer County town in the heart of the Choctaw Nation, set among the lakes and wooded hills near Robbers Cave State Park.

Red Oak is a small town of about 540 people in Latimer County, in the wooded hills of southeastern Oklahoma. It sits at the junction of U.S. Highway 270 and State Highway 82, fourteen miles east of Wilburton, the county seat. The town's history is rooted in the Choctaw Nation: it was founded within the nation's Moshulatubbee District, where Red Oak served as the site of a Choctaw council house, and the arrival of the Choctaw Coal and Railway—later the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf and eventually the Rock Island line—gave the community its start. Red Oak was officially incorporated in 1900. Coal and timber shaped the area's early economy, and the surrounding countryside remained agricultural through statehood, when Latimer County's lines were drawn in 1907. The town's early growth was modest, climbing from fewer than 300 residents at statehood to roughly 400 within a few years, and it has remained a small, close-knit community ever since. The Choctaw Nation remains a central part of the area's identity, visible in its place names, community institutions, and the land itself. Red Oak's character is defined by its setting. The town lies in a region of lakes, hills, woods, and trails, and Robbers Cave State Park—one of Oklahoma's best-known outdoor destinations—is a short drive away near Wilburton, offering cabins, hiking, and lake recreation among sandstone bluffs and forests. The town itself is compact, with a Main Street of local businesses and a PK-12 school district at its center. Education is provided by Red Oak Public Schools, which draws students from Red Oak and the surrounding parts of Latimer and Le Flore counties. For residents, Red Oak offers the quiet rhythms of a rural Oklahoma community, with Wilburton's services and the larger towns of eastern Oklahoma within reach, and a landscape that invites hunting, fishing, and time outdoors.
