Small Town in the Osage Hills

Apartments in Ramona, OK

Welcome to Ramona, a small Washington County town in the rolling Osage Hills, near Bartlesville and the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve.

Ramona is a small town in Washington County, Oklahoma, situated in the rolling Osage Hills of the state's northeastern corner along U.S. Route 75, about seventeen miles southeast of Bartlesville and roughly forty miles north of Tulsa. At the 2020 census its population was 524. The town traces its beginnings to 1899, when it was established as a railroad station in the Cooweescoowee District of the Cherokee Nation, then part of Indian Territory. Ramona grew around its depot as a shipping and service point for the surrounding farm and ranch country, and later shared in the early twentieth-century oil boom that transformed Washington County and made nearby Bartlesville a petroleum-industry center. Today Ramona functions as a quiet residential community and a local education hub. It is home to the high school and middle school campus of Caney Valley Public Schools, a pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade district that also serves the neighboring communities of Ochelata, Oglesby, and Vera. The Cherokee Casino Ramona, located near the highway, is among the town's more prominent commercial anchors. The town's location places it within easy reach of some of Oklahoma's most distinctive attractions. The Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, the largest protected remnant of tallgrass prairie on Earth and home to a free-ranging herd of roughly 2,200 bison, lies nearby to the west, and the Woolaroc Museum and Wildlife Preserve near Bartlesville combines Western and American Indian art with bison, elk, and longhorn cattle. For those seeking an unpretentious small-town home base in the heart of Osage country, Ramona offers history, open space, and convenient access to the region's larger towns.
