Porum is a small incorporated town in southeastern Muskogee County, Oklahoma, about thirty miles south of the county seat of Muskogee and within the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation. The town traces its origins to the early twentieth century, when two neighboring settlements — Porum Gap and Starvilla — united in 1905 to form the community that exists today. Its name honors John Porum Davis, a rancher, Civil War veteran, and Cherokee Nation councilman who represented the Canadian District in Indian Territory. The town occupies a little under one square mile and is home to roughly six hundred residents. It has long functioned as a quiet residential and agricultural crossroads in the hills and valleys of eastern Oklahoma, with a mix of in-town lots and surrounding rural acreage.
