Porter is a small town in Wagoner County, Oklahoma, located in the rolling farmland of the state's northeastern region, east of the city of Muskogee. The community grew in the early 20th century as an agricultural center, and its development was shaped by the surrounding countryside: during World War I, the heightened need for food and fiber fueled the area's farm economy and supported the town's growth. At its peak in the early 1900s, Porter recorded a population of more than 600 residents, and it has since settled into a stable count of roughly 560 people as of the 2020 census. Porter's civic life has long been documented by a series of local newspapers, including the Porter Capital, Porter Enterprise, Porter Exponent, and Porter News, which have served the town since the early twentieth century.
