Apartments in Moyers, OK
Welcome to Moyers, a small unincorporated community in Pushmataha County, resting at the foot of the Kiamichi Mountains in southeastern Oklahoma.
Moyers is a small unincorporated community in Pushmataha County, in the southeastern corner of Oklahoma. It rests at the foot of the Kiamichi Mountains, a rugged, forested range in the western Ouachitas, and lies about ten miles east of Antlers, the county seat. State Highway 2, a two-lane road winding through timbered hills, is the community's lifeline, and the Kiamichi River runs through the valley nearby. A settlement has stood at the site of Moyers since at least the 1880s, when the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway—the "Frisco"—built a line north to south through the Choctaw Nation, connecting Fort Smith, Arkansas, with Paris, Texas. The railroad paralleled the Kiamichi River for much of its route through present-day Pushmataha County, and train stations sprang up along the line. The first known mention of Moyers appeared in an Antlers newspaper in 1904. The community's economy turned on the railroad and the mountains. An asphalt mine in the Kiamichi Mountains shipped its product to Moyers' depot by tram, and the elevated tram bed is still visible near the local school. The Frisco carried passengers until the late 1950s and freight until 1981, when the line closed and its rails were removed; the construction of State Highway 2 had already begun to shift the area's connections to the road. Today Moyers is a tiny, quiet place of roughly 60 residents, surrounded by national forest and mountain scenery. Moyers Public School serves the community, and residents rely on Antlers for most services. The Ouachita National Forest, the Kiamichi River, and the region's lakes and hunting grounds provide recreation, while the Choctaw Nation's presence shapes the area's culture and history. For those seeking solitude in the mountains of southeastern Oklahoma, Moyers represents a deep-rural, forested way of life, defined less by amenities than by the surrounding landscape.
