Creek County Town South of Tulsa

Apartments in Mounds, OK

Welcome to Mounds, a small Creek County town just south of Tulsa, on Alternate U.S. 75 in east-central Oklahoma.

Mounds is a small town in Creek County, Oklahoma, in the east-central part of the state, located just south of Tulsa and about 11 miles south of Sapulpa, the county seat, along Alternate U.S. Highway 75. With a 2020 census population of about 930, it is a compact, largely residential community that sits at the southern edge of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The town's history reaches back to the late 19th century, when its first post office, established in 1895, was known as Posey — a name honoring Alexander Posey, a prominent Creek poet and writer. That naming reflects the town's location within the Creek Nation's historic territory and the region's Native American heritage. By Oklahoma statehood in 1907, Mounds had a population of about 675. Mounds is notable for an unusual distinction: it is the site of an observatory operated by the Astronomy Club of Tulsa, a facility that benefits from the area's relatively dark rural skies and gives the small town a place in the region's scientific and educational life. The town is served by the Mounds Independent School District, which operates the local elementary, middle, and high school. Its location just south of Tulsa on Alternate U.S. Highway 75 makes Mounds a practical base for commuters, placing the employment, shopping, healthcare, and cultural amenities of the Tulsa metro within a short drive while preserving a rural, small-town setting. The surrounding Creek County countryside offers open space, and the nearby signs referencing "Liberty Mounds" point to the adjacent community of Liberty, a reminder of the area's patchwork of small incorporated towns.
