Lake Texoma Gateway Town

Apartments in Kingston, OK

A small Marshall County town on the shores of Lake Texoma, a recreation gateway known for striped bass fishing and easy lake living near the Texas border.

Kingston is a small town in Marshall County, Oklahoma, in the south-central part of the state near the Texas border, on the western shore of Lake Texoma. Incorporated in 1906, the town grew up along the Frisco railroad as a modest agricultural and trading center, and its early residents actively promoted the community with events such as Traders' Day. Kingston's fortunes changed dramatically in the mid-twentieth century. When Denison Dam was completed in 1944, it impounded the Red and Washita rivers to create Lake Texoma, one of the largest reservoirs in the United States. The lake straddles the Oklahoma-Texas line and quickly became one of the region's premier recreation destinations. Kingston, sitting right on the lake's western shore, became a gateway town, with marinas, fishing guides, and lakeside businesses growing up around the new visitor economy. Today the lake defines Kingston's identity. Between six and nine million people visit Lake Texoma annually for boating, fishing, camping, and hiking, and the lake is particularly celebrated for its striped bass fishery. The town's small year-round population of about 1,400 is joined by seasonal visitors and lake-house owners, and the local economy leans heavily on tourism and outdoor recreation. Kingston remains a genuine small town, with Kingston Public Schools at its center and the county seat of Madill a short drive west. Its appeal is straightforward: an affordable, friendly community with direct access to one of the Southwest's great reservoirs, within driving distance of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro. It suits anglers, boaters, retirees, and anyone seeking a lake-country lifestyle.
