Pawnee County Railroad Town

Apartments in Jennings, OK

Welcome to Jennings, a small Pawnee County town born in the 1893 Cherokee Outlet land run, set between Stillwater and Tulsa near the Cimarron Turnpike.

Jennings is a small town in Pawnee County, Oklahoma, located in the north-central part of the state between Stillwater and Tulsa, near the Cimarron Turnpike and the community of Hallett. Its position along one of Oklahoma's main toll corridors puts the amenities and employment of both Stillwater, home of Oklahoma State University, and the Tulsa metro within a manageable drive. The town traces its origins to the Cherokee Outlet land opening of September 16, 1893, one of Oklahoma's great land runs. The community is believed to have been named for Alphonzo "Al" Jennings, a frontier lawyer turned outlaw who donated forty acres for the townsite. Railroads soon arrived—by one account three lines served the town—and during the oil boom era Jennings swelled to roughly 2,000 residents with several hotels, a far larger place than it is today. After the boom receded, Jennings settled into a quieter existence as a rural community. The 2020 census counted 280 residents, and the town supports a single school serving pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Most employed residents commute to work in Tulsa and Stillwater, a pattern that defines Jennings as a small-town residential option anchored between two employment centers. Today Jennings appeals to people seeking the affordability and open space of rural Oklahoma without being far from city services. Its school-centered community, its history as a frontier boomtown, and its convenient turnpike access give it a distinctive, if understated, identity in Pawnee County. The surrounding farm and ranch country provides the quiet, wide-open setting that many residents are looking for.
