Hominy is a city in Osage County, Oklahoma, located at the intersection of State Highways 20 and 99, about twenty-one miles south of Pawhuska. It lies within the Osage Nation, the reservation of the Osage people, and the town's history is inseparable from that heritage. Hominy originated following the removal of the Osage from Kansas in the early 1870s, and its early leadership reflected the trading families who helped build the town — Frederick Drummond, part of the region's influential ranching family, served as its first mayor. The discovery of the Hominy Oil Field in 1916 brought a petroleum boom that transformed the community, part of the larger Osage County oil era that pumped hundreds of millions of barrels of crude between 1901 and 1930. That boom-and-bust legacy still shapes the town's character and its built environment, from early twentieth-century commercial buildings to the ranching operations that anchor the surrounding countryside, including the Drummond Ranch. Hominy today is a small, close-knit city of roughly 3,300 residents known for its Osage heritage, Western identity, and a notable arts community expressed through murals across town. Major local employers include the Osage Casino-Hominy, nearby retail, and the Dick Conner Correctional Center, while many residents work in ranching, energy, and the broader Osage County economy. The town's schools, Hominy Public Schools, serve students from pre-kindergarten through high school and anchor community life. Its setting offers something rare: the rolling Osage Hills and, a short drive away, the Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, the largest protected tallgrass prairie in the world, where bison roam. For residents, Hominy combines deep Native American and ranching heritage with access to Tulsa and the wide-open landscapes that define northeastern Oklahoma.
