Henryetta is a city in Okmulgee County, in east-central Oklahoma, located on Interstate 40 roughly midway between Oklahoma City and Tulsa. At the 2020 census, the city recorded a population of 5,640. Its position on one of Oklahoma's principal east-west corridors makes it a practical small-town base for commuters to either of the state's two largest metros, each about an hour away, while the nearby city of Okmulgee serves as the county seat. Henryetta's character was shaped by coal. The city grew rapidly during Oklahoma's coal-mining boom, and by 1909 some fourteen mines were producing about 65,000 tons of coal each month, generating a substantial payroll that flowed back into the local economy. That industrial heritage remains central to the community's identity and is documented at the Henryetta Territorial Museum, housed in a preserved 1905 one-room schoolhouse, where exhibits cover the region's coal mining, oil drilling, and early development. The city also has an outsized sports legacy. Troy Aikman, the Hall of Fame NFL quarterback, spent part of his early life in Henryetta and played high school football there, while rodeo legend Jim Shoulders, a sixteen-time world champion cowboy and the inventor of the mechanical bull, called the city home. Both are honored in local museum exhibits. Recreation centers on Nichols Park and Jim Hall Lake, a 300-acre area offering a swimming beach, fishing docks, walking trails, and disc golf. Public education is provided by Henryetta Public Schools. For residents, Henryetta combines affordable small-town living with deep local history and easy highway access to the rest of the state.
