Haskell is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, in the eastern part of the state within the Arkansas River valley. It sits southeast of Tulsa and northeast of Muskogee, the county seat, positioned between the larger Tulsa metropolitan area and the region's rural countryside. The Arkansas River flows just east of town, anchoring the area's geography and providing a defining natural feature. The community was established in 1904 on the Midland Valley Railroad, in what was then Indian Territory, and named for townsite developer Charles N. Haskell. The railroad spurred early agricultural trade, allowing local farmers to ship grain, hay, corn, melons, and cotton to distant markets. Haskell truly boomed after the discovery of oil and gas in 1910, when the population rose sharply and the town gained paved streets, sidewalks, electric lights, natural gas lines, and water works. In its early decades Haskell was known as the "Queen City of the Arkansas Valley." Today Haskell is a quiet town of about 1,600 residents, having settled into a steady, small-town rhythm after its early boom. It is served by the Haskell Public Schools district, whose campuses include Mary White Elementary School, E.W. Beavers Middle School, and Haskell High School. The town's modest size and strong local identity are reflected in its community celebrations, such as the annual Frontier Day.
