Glenpool is a city in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, in the southwestern part of the Tulsa metropolitan area, along the U.S. 75 corridor just south of Tulsa. The 2020 census counted 14,040 residents, a sharp increase from about 10,800 a decade earlier, reflecting the city's growth as a suburban community within the Tulsa region. The city operates under a council-manager form of government and has evolved from a rough oil camp into a well-served modern suburb. The city's origin is one of Oklahoma's defining oil stories. On November 22, 1905, drillers struck the massive Glenn Pool field, one of the most important early oil discoveries in the state's history. The strike triggered a boom: the small settlement of Glenn grew from twelve families in 1901 to more than 3,000 people by the end of 1907, and the town of Glenpool was founded in 1908 amid the rush. The field's wealth helped establish Tulsa as the "Oil Capital of the World," and its infrastructure and institutions still trace back to that early 20th-century petroleum economy. That heritage now coexists with a thoroughly suburban present. Glenpool Public Schools serves more than 2,500 students from pre-K through high school, and Black Gold Park anchors recreation with sports fields, trails, playgrounds, and a splash pad, alongside the Glenpool Conference Center. The annual Black Gold Days festival keeps the oil story alive with community events and family activities.
