Drumright is a city in Creek and Payne counties, in northeastern Oklahoma, about 42 miles southwest of Tulsa. The 2020 census counted 2,560 residents, and the city sits at the junction of State Highways 16, 33, and 99, roughly midway between Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Drumright was born of oil. In 1912, the discovery of the Cushing-Drumright Oil Field by Thomas B. Slick triggered one of the great booms of the Mid-Continent oil province. By the mid-1910s, the field ranked among the most prolific in the world, with daily production peaking in May 1915 at 310,000 barrels from more than 3,000 wells. The town grew rapidly around the drilling, and the Cushing-Drumright field's spectacular output reshaped the Oklahoma oil industry and helped establish Cushing, just to the west, as a lasting oil-storage and pipeline center. As production waned through the twentieth century, Drumright's population declined from its boom-time peak, but the city retained its identity as an oil town. The Drumright Historical Museum preserves that heritage, documenting the field's discovery, the boom, and the community it created. The oil and gas industry remains part of the regional economy, with Cushing's storage facilities a continuing anchor. Public education is provided by Drumright Public Schools, a single-district system serving the city and surrounding area. Daily life is small-town and unhurried, with residents relying on Tulsa, Stillwater, and Cushing for broader services. Drumright's story — a spectacular oil boom, a long decline, and a durable small community — gives it a distinctive place in Oklahoma's petroleum landscape. Its highway junction location and proximity to Tulsa and the Cushing hub keep it connected to the wider region while its neighborhoods retain the scale of its boom-era beginnings.
