Dewey is a city in Washington County, Oklahoma, in the state's northeastern Green Country region, about 49 miles north of Tulsa and roughly 15 miles south of the Kansas border. With a population of about 3,400, it sits immediately north of Bartlesville and functions as a close partner to that larger city, sharing its commercial and employment landscape while retaining its own small-town identity. The city is best known through its connection to Tom Mix, the celebrated silent-film Western star. Mix worked at the nearby 101 Ranch, won the 1909 National Riding and Rodeo Championship, and in 1912 served as Dewey's first town marshal, an experience that helped launch him toward Hollywood superstardom. That legacy is preserved at the Tom Mix Museum, which displays his saddles, guns, clothing, and other memorabilia. The Dewey Hotel Museum, built in the late 1800s by founding figure Jacob Bartles, and the Prairie Song Pioneer Village round out the city's historical attractions. Dewey's heritage also runs through its rodeo tradition. The Dewey Roundup, held at the local fairgrounds, premiered in 1909 and became an annual Fourth of July event from 1916 until 1948, cementing the city's place in Oklahoma's Western culture. Today the downtown carries that character through antique and specialty shops, an old-fashioned soda fountain, and community gatherings. The city is served by its own Dewey Public Schools district, which enrolls roughly 1,200 students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. U.S. Highway 75 and the nearby Bartlesville area connect Dewey to Tulsa and the broader region, and regional transit service provides demand-response transportation. For residents, Dewey combines a walkable, history-rich small town with immediate access to Bartlesville's employers, health care, and cultural institutions, all within the rolling, oil-and-prairie landscape of northeastern Oklahoma.
