Crowder is a small town in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, in the southeastern part of the state. It sits near U.S. Highway 69, about fifteen miles northeast of McAlester, the county seat, within the former boundaries of the Choctaw Nation in what was once Indian Territory. The community dates to the late nineteenth century, when it grew as a trade center along the region's early transportation routes. The town's name has its own small history. Residents had chosen a different name for the new settlement, but a court ordered a change because another town in the Choctaw Nation already used it, and the community settled on Crowder instead. By 1910 the town had reached a population of 549 and supported hotels and a variety of businesses, a reflection of its early growth as a commercial stop in the region. Over the following decades, Crowder settled into the quiet pattern of a small rural Oklahoma town. The development of Lake Eufaula, Oklahoma's largest lake, brought tourism and recreation dollars to the area and gave the community a new source of activity. Census counts over recent decades have held in the low hundreds, with 303 residents recorded in 2020. Today Crowder operates its own public school district and remains closely tied to the lake and the surrounding countryside. Its position along the U.S. Highway 69 corridor keeps it connected to McAlester and the broader region, while its small scale preserves the character of a close-knit southeastern Oklahoma community.
