Green Country Town in Delaware County
Apartments in Colcord, OK
Welcome to Colcord, a Cherokee-settled town in southern Delaware County that sits near the Arkansas line in Oklahoma's Green Country.
Colcord is a small town in the southern part of Delaware County, Oklahoma, in the Green Country region of the state's northeastern corner. Its history predates the town's formal incorporation: the area was settled in the 1830s by Cherokee 'Old Settlers' who established a community originally called Row. The town was later renamed for Charles F. Colcord, an early Oklahoma Territory lawman and oilman, and was reincorporated in 1960 with a population of just 273. Today Colcord has a population of about 730 and serves as a small residential and service community in a rural, wooded corner of Delaware County near the Arkansas state line. The town lies a short drive from West Siloam Springs and the larger city of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, just across the border, giving residents access to regional shopping and services while keeping a distinctly small-town Oklahoma setting. The surrounding landscape is part of the Ozark foothills, characterized by rolling, timbered terrain and spring-fed lakes. Natural Falls State Park, one of Oklahoma's scenic landmarks, lies nearby and is known for its waterfall and hiking trails; the park's falls famously appeared in the 1974 film Where the Red Fern Grows. To the south, the Lake Eucha and Spavinaw reservoirs provide fishing in a protected, wooded watershed. Colcord is served by Colcord Public Schools, home of the Hornets, which anchors community life along with area churches and local events. Delaware County's broader identity as a tourism and lake destination — anchored by Grand Lake o' the Cherokees to the north — shapes the region's economy and recreation, and Colcord offers a quiet, affordable entry point to the Green Country lifestyle.
