Coalgate is a city in southeastern Oklahoma that serves as the seat of Coal County. Its name and origins are tied directly to the region's coal deposits: the town was founded in 1889 within the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, as a mining camp called Liddle, and it grew into the commercial and governmental center of the surrounding coal-producing district. Coal County was later carved from the Choctaw Nation and named for the mineral that shaped its early economy. Today Coalgate remains a compact county-seat community with a population of about 1,700. County government, schools, and local services anchor the economy, alongside ranching, farming, and the area's legacy industries.
