Claremore is a city in Rogers County, Oklahoma, and the county seat, located in northeast Oklahoma's Green Country, northeast of Tulsa. Its population is roughly 20,000, and it is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The city covers about 12.3 square miles in the rolling hills of Green Country, a popular nickname for northeast Oklahoma. The city's name dates to the 1880s, when John Bullette, a Delaware Indian, settled on the site and called it Claremore for an Osage chief whose people once lived there. Claremore grew within the Cherokee Nation's Cooweescoowee District and became a trading and railroad center. At statehood in 1907, the surrounding county was named Rogers County for Clement Vann Rogers, a prominent Cherokee rancher and father of humorist Will Rogers. Claremore is closely associated with Will Rogers, who attended school in the area, and the Will Rogers Memorial Museum is located in the city. Claremore also sits on historic Route 66, which carried travelers through town for much of the 20th century and remains central to its identity, with Route 66 centennial monuments and celebrations drawing visitors. Public schools are provided by Claremore Public Schools, and Rogers State University, a four-year regional university with about 3,700 students and NCAA Division II athletics, is located in the city. As the seat of Rogers County, Claremore anchors government and services for the surrounding area.
