Historic Route 66 Town

Apartments in Chelsea, OK

Chelsea is a Route 66 town in Rogers County with an oil-field past, set on the historic highway northeast of Tulsa.

Chelsea is a town in Rogers County, Oklahoma, located in the northeastern part of the state along historic Route 66. The community sits at the intersection of State Highways 28 and 66, about 19 miles northeast of Claremore, the county seat, and roughly 47 miles northeast of Tulsa. Its position on the historic Mother Road gives the town a recognizable place in the region's transportation and travel history. Chelsea was named after the Chelsea district of London, England, by Charles Peach, a railroad official who was a native of London. The town began as a stop on the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, which later became part of the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway system, and grew as a rail-served agricultural and commercial community in the early 20th century. Its development was further shaped by the Chelsea-Alluwe Oil Field, which brought drilling and petroleum-related activity to the surrounding area. With a population of about 1,990, Chelsea functions as a small, self-contained rural town. Its downtown and surrounding residential streets retain the scale and character of an early Oklahoma railroad town, while the Route 66 corridor continues to bring travelers through the community. Local institutions, including the public school system and a public library, anchor daily life. For residents, Chelsea offers a small-town pace with convenient access to larger centers. Claremore, known as the home of the Will Rogers Memorial, lies nearby to the southwest, and Tulsa provides employment, shopping, and cultural amenities within about an hour's drive. The town's Route 66 identity, agricultural surroundings, and oil-field history combine to give Chelsea a distinctly Oklahoman sense of place.
