Calera is a town in Bryan County, Oklahoma, located just south of Durant, the county seat, in the southeastern part of the state near the Texas border. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth combined statistical area, reflecting the region's growing economic ties to North Texas. The town has experienced significant growth in recent years. Its 2020 census population of about 2,900 represented a roughly one-third increase over 2010, driven by employment at the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma — whose headquarters and enterprises are based in nearby Durant — and by regional development including the Texas Instruments semiconductor plant across the state line in Sherman, Texas. That growth has brought new families, expanded school facilities, and new housing to a community that historically served as a small agricultural and residential town. Calera is within the Choctaw Nation, and the Nation's presence is woven into local life, from educational partnerships with Calera Public Schools to the employment and cultural institutions centered in Durant. The town's own school district, Calera Public Schools, educates local students and has grown alongside the community. Recreation and regional amenities are close at hand. Lake Texoma, one of the region's largest reservoirs and a renowned destination for striped bass fishing, boating, and camping, lies a short drive to the west, while Durant provides shopping, healthcare, dining, and Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The town's position just south of Durant and near the Texas line gives residents a small-town home base within an expanding regional economy that stretches toward the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex.
