Southeastern Oklahoma Town
Apartments in Caddo, OK
Welcome to Caddo, a small Bryan County town in southeastern Oklahoma whose name comes from a Caddo word meaning "real chief."
Caddo is a small town in Bryan County, Oklahoma, in the southeastern part of the state within the former Choctaw Nation. Its name comes from a Caddo word meaning "real chief," a nod to the American Indian heritage of the region. The town has deep roots. In the late nineteenth century, Caddo was among the more prominent settlements in the area, and it competed with the nearby community of Durant for regional importance. The surrounding region was part of the Choctaw Nation until Oklahoma statehood in 1907, and the town's name and setting both reflect that heritage. When Bryan County was organized, however, Durant was chosen as the county seat, and it soon outpaced Caddo in growth. By 1930 Caddo's population had settled around 900, and it has held near that level since. Recent census counts have shown modest growth, with 944 residents in 2000, 997 in 2010, and 1,017 in 2020. The town operates its own public school district, Caddo Public Schools, which serves the community through grade twelve. Agriculture and the local school have long been the community's anchors. Today Caddo functions as a quiet, close-knit town tied to the surrounding farmland and to Durant, the Bryan County seat a short drive away. The town is reached by state and county roads that connect it to Durant and to the U.S. Highway 69 and 75 corridor that runs through the region. The rolling countryside, the Choctaw Nation heritage, and the small-school community give Caddo its character. Residents rely on Durant for shopping, medical services, and regional amenities while enjoying the slower pace of small-town southeastern Oklahoma. Its combination of small-town scale, deep history, and easy access to Durant makes Caddo a settled, comfortable place to live in southeastern Oklahoma.
