Broken Bow is a city in McCurtain County, in the far southeastern corner of Oklahoma, where the rolling timberlands rise toward the Ouachita Mountains. It sits near the Arkansas and Texas state lines and serves as the principal town of one of the state's most thinly populated and heavily forested regions. The area's story begins with the Choctaw Nation, whose people settled southeastern Oklahoma after removal from the southeastern United States in the nineteenth century. Broken Bow grew as a timber town in the early twentieth century when the Dierks brothers established a large sawmill operation, drawing workers and investment and shaping the community as a classic company town. The Dierks holdings later passed to Weyerhaeuser, and timber has remained an economic backbone alongside farming and ranching, which were the area's original way of life. In recent decades tourism has transformed the area's fortunes. Beavers Bend State Park, Broken Bow Lake, and the Lower Mountain Fork River draw visitors year-round, and the adjacent Hochatown community has grown into Oklahoma's cabin-resort capital, lined with rental cabins, wineries, and outfitters. The town also hosts a Tyson chicken-processing plant, adding manufacturing employment to the timber and tourism base. Roughly twelve percent of McCurtain County's population lives within the city limits. With roughly 4,300 residents, Broken Bow offers a blend of small-town life and resort energy. The community suits families tied to the schools and timber industry, outdoor enthusiasts, and buyers seeking vacation or investment property near the lake and park. Neighboring towns such as Idabel, the county seat to the southeast, and the Hochatown resort district form a loose network of communities across the timbered landscape.
